Subcutaneous tumors on the heads of layer chickens infected with avian leukosis virus

An outbreak of subcutaneous tumors on the heads of layer chickens in a poultry farm in Toyama Prefecture was examined histologically, immunohistochemically and virlogically. Huge tumors were observed on the heads of a large number of chickens in only 1 chicken house of the poultry farm. Six chickens of them with tumors at cheeks or jaws were examined histologically, and identified as myxoma in chickens No. 1-5 while the tumor of chicken No. 6 was fibroma. These tumors were specifically stained with a monoclonal antibody against avian leukosis virus (ALV) immunohistochemically. Subgroup A ALV (ALV-A) was isolated from the tumors of chickens No. 5 and No. 6, and ALV-like particles were found in the tumor of chicken No. 3 ultrastructurally. However, ALV-A was not detected from 2 flockmates without subcutaneous tumors and 2 normal chickens reared in other chicken house of the same farm. From these results, ALV-A seemed to cause these subcutaneous myxomas and fibroma in this case.
