For the purpose of dam operation and management, much data are monitored and accumulated over an extended period of time in the local dam offices, but these data are considered to be not necessarily utilized sufficiently. Mitsuno(1994) and Horino et al.(2001) defined and introduced the storage capacity in a basin and showed that it is simply calculated by use of daily rainfall, discharge and evapotranspiration data. Those data above are easily obtained because those data are usually accumulated in the local dam offices. There are two types of the storage capacity, one is water use storage depth (WUSD), and the other is total storage depth (TSD). These values are considered useful to comprehend characteristics of basins and expected to be utilized. In this paper, 23 dams' data were collected and characteristics of basins were analyzed from the perspective of the storage capacity. Some data of the storage capacity were obtained from 17 dams' data by the previous study of Isozuma et al. (2001). Other 6 dam' data were newly calculated and added by authors in this paper. Based on the consideration of the storage capacity and other characteristic values in basins, conclusions in this paper were obtained in the followings. (1) It is assumed that magnitude of storage capacity reflects the variety of dam operation and representative surface geologic condition. (2) Both water use storage depth and total storage depth are associated with various quantity of a basin, for example, area or precipitation. Moreover some kind of combination of the two will make a more reliable index for characteristics of a basin. (3) Though both WUSD and TSD are associated with specific sediment rate, neither depths are associated with annual sediment rate in a dam basin.
