To clearify the relationship between the vase life and sugar content of chrysanthemums, we investigated the effects of light shielding treatment during reproductive growth on vase life and sugar content in cut chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.). The fall flowering-type cultivar 'Jinba', which was grown in light culture, was kept under a condition of light shielding at a rate of 45% 22 and 32 days after stopping night lighting. The vase life of cut chrysanthemums cultivated under non-light shielding condition was 38 days. However, the vase life values of cut chrysanthemums kept under a condition of light shielding at a rate of 45% 22 and 32 days after stopping night lighting were 25 and 29 days, respectively. We found that light shielding treatment during reproductive growth shortens vase life. Before the vase life test, there was no difference in the sugar content of ray florets of cut chrysanthemums between the plants subjected and not subjected to light shielding treatment. However, the sugar contents of leaves and stems of cut chrysanthemums decreased remarkably owing to light shielding treatment. These results show that the vase life of cut chrysanthemums increases, as the sugar contents of their leaves and stems increase.
