Effect of annual ring angle in a cross section of wooden deck lumber upon surface checking
2007
Watanabe, K.(Tokyo Univ. (Japan)) | Shida, S.
Relation between the annual-ring angle and the surface checking which developed by extending end check of redwood (Sequola sempervirens Endl.) deck was investigated. Furthermore, exterior exposure tests of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D.Don) lumber were carried out in order to examine the effect of shrinkage in the width direction and annual ring angle of the lumber upon surface checking. Obtained results were as follows; 1) As angle of annual ring in redwood and sugi increased, the number of surface checking which developed by extending from end checking decreased. The surface checking seldom occurred when the angle of annual ring is more than 40 degrees for both species. 2) The surface checking seldom occurred when shrinkage along the width of lumber is less than 3% in case of sugi lumber.
