Effects of shading treatments before and after the heading stage on grain yield and quality in rice [Oryza sativa] cultivar 'Yumemizuho'

It reviewed about effects of shading treatments before and after the heading stage on grain yield and quality in rice cultivar 'Yumemizuho'. Results are summarized as follows. Shading treatments before the heading stage. 1) The grain yield was decreased by the shortage of spikelet number per head, maturity ratio and weight of 1000 grains. And the yield of the high temperature during the ripening period was decreased more than the low temperature. 2) The percentage of perfect grain was degradation by the increase of immature kernels. 3) Insufficient grain filling caused the decrease of amylase content and the increase of protein content, but other the same estimate. 4) Dry matter weight and nitrogen content of the leaf, stem and head per spikelet during ripening stage were increased in the leaf and stem, and decreased in the head. Shading treatments after the heading stage. 1) The grain yield was decreased by the shortage of fruit bearing percentage. And the yield of the high temperature during the ripening period was more decreased. 2) The appearance of milky white, ventral white and basal white kernels was observed same ratio to the non-shading treatment in the low temperature during the ripening period, but increased in the high temperature during the ripening period. 3) Insufficient grain filling caused the decrease of amylase content and the increase of protein content, and as a result, the palatability of cooked rice was low. 4) Dry matter weight of the leaf, stem and head per spikelet during ripening stage was decreased, and nitrogen content of the leaf, stem and head per spikelet was decreased except for the middle ripening stage in the leaf and stem.
