We have attempted to develop a new strain pig of Duroc breed from Duroc pigs imported from the USA since 1999. The sixth generation (G6) which we developed in cooperation with Aichi, has already been authorized to be a new strain pig. This experiment was to examine the reproductive ability in the fifth generation (G5), and growth and meat production ability in G6. 1) By crossing between G5, with a strategy of lowering coefficient of relationship, the last generation, G6 was produced. 2) Litter size in G5 was smaller than in the basal generation, but this change was not generation-dependent. 3) In G6, daily body weight gain (DG) was 1030+-118g in males and 928+-95g in females, which was greater by 9g in males and by 5g in females than in G5. BF was 1.9+-0.3cm in males and 2.2+-0.3cm in females. There was a 0.7cm increase in BF for males and 0.9cm increase for females than in G1. DG and BF were improved with the generation to reach our value. 4) Crude lipid content of the longissimus muscle in G6 was 3.4+-0.8% across both sexes, and thus it ranged from 3 to 4%, regardless of the generation. 5) Total score for assessment of leg hoof shapes in G6 was 17.8+-3.6 in males and 18.3+-4.5 in females, and it tended to be improved with the generation.
