To obtain the basic knowledge of blackening phenomenon in sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) heartwood, moisture content (MC) and pH in heartwood, sapwood, and branch wood were examined using 26-year-old trees originated from seedlings. In addition, possibility was evaluated for selection of trees with blackening heartwood by MC and pH of blanch wood. MC in sapwood showed higher values than these in heartwood at all sampling positions (1.2 and 5.2 m above the ground). There were no significant relationships between MC in heartwood and MC in sapwood. In addition, relatively low values in correlation coefficient between branch wood MC and heartwood or sapwood MC were found. On the other hand, pH showed higher values in heartwood than in sapwood. In addition, no significant relationships in pH were found between heartwood and sapwood, and branch wood and heartwood. These results suggest that it is difficult to estimate the MC or pH in heartwood and sapwood by using MC or pH in branch wood. In the heartwood at 1.2 m above the ground, a significant, positive correlation coefficient was found between MC and pH. From these results, it can be speculated that high MC and weak alkaline in sugi heartwood may occur during changing from sapwood to heartwood.
