In this article, we review studies on effect of urbanization on bird communities and those on relationships between bird communities and characteristics of patchy habitats in urban areas. The change in bird species richness along urbanization gradient follows the intermediate disturbance hypothesis. As urbanization decreases the number of native and environment-sensitive species and promotes homogenization of avifauna, we should prevent urbanization in order to conserve local and regional avian diversity. Urban patchy habitats, especially woodlots, are very important for coexistence of birds and human beings in urban areas. Many studies showed positive correlation between bird species richness and the amount of vegetation cover, especially in shrub layer. Although the strong positive correlation between bird species richness and woodlot area is well known, it needs to be studied further what woodlot area means for birds.
