Latvia, to ensure consumers with milk must increase its milk production 810.3 thousands t in the year 2005 up to 1025.0 thousands t in the year 2013 and up to 1310 thousands t in the year 2020 and it will be mainly based on cows’ milk yield productivity increasing. Analogically, beef production, pork, poultry meat and egg production must be increased, too. Such production increasing dynamics will ensure our country's necessity for these kinds of products. Secondly, the most important are the quality indices of production that must be evaluated. The scientists of the Research Institute Sigra have carried out wide investigations to determine the quality criteria of animal food products for consumers and have worked out recommendations for production safety and health measures helping to prevent pollution. On purpose to determinate and evaluate all risk factors of production chain, biochemical, microbiological and other investigations are being carried out. The obtained conclusions have given the producers an opportunity to realize correct animal selection, to the improve animals' welfare and health. Simultaneously research development, strong and weak side analyses of animal husbandry and veterinary medicine branches, possible threats, the methodological solutions were determined for these branches in the near term and in the future.

Pētījumu atziņas, analīzes un nākotnes skatījums ir izmantojams ministriju, zemnieku, dažādu iestāžu, asociāciju, konsultāciju dienesta, speciālistu u.c. interesentu darbā. Lopkopības nozares situācijas analīze tika veikta laika periodā no 2001.gada līdz 2005.gadam. Veidojot prognozes tās attīstībai, pamatojāmies uz pētījumu un analīžu rezultātiem, kas veikti Latvijas Lauksaimniecības universitātes Biotehnoloģijas un veterinārmedicīnas zinātniskā institūtā Sigra un citos sadarbības institūtos, kā arī izmantojām Centrālās statistikas biroja periodikas un interneta avotus, Zemkopības Ministrijas, Lauku atbalsta dienesta un citu institūciju materiālus.
