The product group of decorative trees and shrubs comprise about 65% of the total value of decorative nursery production in Latvia, hence being the most relevant group of this sector. As Latvian market is comparatively small, but the efficiency of production costs is feasible only through increasing the volume of output, local nurseries should develop also the precurses for the acquisition of potential export markets. Today, practically all Latvian export of decorative trees and shrubs goes to Russia (99% in 2006), indicating Russia as one of the major marketing countries. The demand of Russia for decorative trees and shrubs is growing rapidly. The tremendous development potential of the Russian demand is also shown by the available data on consumption of plants, which is substantially smaller than in European countries. The demand for imported plants is also growing in Ukraine and Belarus. At present, there is practically no export from Latvia to Scandinavian countries; however, taking into account the significant market value of nursery stock in these countries as well as the import value of decorative trees and shrubs increasing quite rapidly, Scandinavian countries should also be considered as one of potential export markets. Markets in Lithuania and Estonia are also comparatively small; hence the Baltic States would rather be considered as a single market and fulfilment of the consumption in these neighbouring countries should be carried out alongside with the local market activities. The demand for decorative trees and shrubs is constantly growing in these countries, alongside with favourable economic development trends.
