Potential of biodiesel production from Jatropha curcas in the Philippines

This paper discussed the potential of and issues on biodiesel production from Jatropha curcas in the Philippines. The economic analysis was based on a 1,000 liters per day village-scale Jatropha biodiesel plant that would require approximately 170-300 hectares of Jatropha plantation. The paper first established the national (as well as global) biodiesel demand as mandated by Republic Act 9367, otherwise known as the Biofuel Act of 2006. Quantifications of estimated benefits such as foreign exchange savings, job generations and reduction of air pollution emission on the use of biofuels have been presented. On the other hand, the primary and secondary processes involved in Jatropha biodiesel production have been discussed based on UPLB biodiesel production researches. Latest biodiesel production technologies such as the Lurgi, CD-ADM and Dry Washing were described. Advantages and applicability of each production technologies were highlighted. Based on the estimated P4.5 million Total Capital Investment and Annual Operating Expenses of P8.63 million, the sensitivity analysis showed that at a seed price of P5/kg and Jatropha biodiesel price of P35/liter will result in a 17.26 percent return on investment and 3.85 years payback period. As the crude Jatropha oil physical and chemical characteristics are comparable with that of banker fuel, its use on power generating units and slow moving engines, if allowed, may be more economically viable than the transesterified crude Jatropha oil.
