Effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on fodder yield of maize and its subsequent effect on soil

A field study was carried out to evaluate the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers using maize as a test crop during autumn, 2000. Well rotten farmyard manure (FYM) and compost at 20 t ha-1 were applied as organic fertilizers with and without supplement of one and two sprays of EM solution, while inorganic fertilizer at 120-80 kg NP ha-1 was applied in the form of urea and DAP, respectively. The results showed significant effect of both organic and inorganic fertilizers on yield and yield components of maize. Treatments differed significantly for tissue analysis of the fodder for nitrogen and phosphorus. The FYM and compost with two sprays of EM solution were at par with inorganic fertilizer, and were statistically different from FYM and compost treatments applied without EM spray. However, no significant differences among different sources of applied fertilizers were recorded on germination, number of leaves plant-1 and K contents of p lant tissues. It can be inferred that organic fertilizers such as FYM and EM compost are as good as inorganic fertilizers if supplemented with EM spray.
