Freshwater algae from Hajira and its adjacent areas, district Poonch, Azad Kashmir

Altogether 40 samples were collected from Hajira and its adjacent areas during 2007, out of which 74 algal species were identified belonging to 46 genera of 8 phyla. The phylum Cyanophyta was represented by 21 species (28.7%) of 13 genera, Volvocophyta by 16 species (21.6%) of 10 genera, Dinophyta by 3 species (4.1%) of 2 genera, Chrysophyta by 1 species (1.4%) of 1 genus, Bacillariophyta by 20 species (27 %) of 10 genera, Xanthophyta by 2 species (2.7%) of 2 genera, Chlorophyta by 9 species (12.2%) of 7 genera and Charophyta by 2 species (2.7%) of 1 genus. Species of the phylum Cyanophyta were found to be most dominant and next prevalent species were in the phylum Bacillariophyta, while minimum number of species were found in the phyla Chrysophyta, Xanthophyta and Charophyta.
