Estimation of fruits quality of selected tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) from organic and conventional cultivation with special consideration of bioactive compounds content

There is growing interest for organic farming in Europe and other parts of the world. Consumers are constantly looking for the safe foods rich in the numerous beneficial substances, foods with the controlled quality. There are scientific foundations allowing to assume that vegetables and fruits from the organic production can contain more beneficial substances (such as polyphenols and vitamin C) than plant crops from the conventional production. Few research studies seem to confirm this hypothesis but still the knowledge in this respect is insufficient. Therefore it was found useful to conduct the presented studies comparing the content of bioactive compounds in the tomato fruits cultivated in the organic vs. conventional way. The research study has comprised the standard cultivars Rumba, Kmicic and Gigant and cherry-tomato cultivar Koralik. The results obtained have shown that organic tomatoes contained more total and reducing sugars and more organic acids. Moreover in the organic fruits significantly more bioactive compounds such as vitamin C, betacarotene, flavonols and phenolic acids have been found. Only the content of lycopene was higher in the conventional fruits
