The effect of habitat on development and chemical composition of bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn

The study was aimed at estimating the influence of soils on the length of the growing period and the plant height. The soils were developed from two rocks: serpentinite and gabro. The content of macroelements and heavy metals was analyzed in the soil and plant as well. Growing period of the plants in the serpentinite soil was delayed and shortened compared to the plants growing in the gabro soil. It is likely that factors responsible for the altered plant appearance and for the shortened growing period are the high concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Ni) in the serpentinite soil as well as their accumulation in rootstocks of the bracken fern
