Stand architecture and the level of winter triticale yielding according to the applied cultivation simplifications

The effect of seven ways of soil cultivation on the spring triticale yielding was studied in a field experiment carried out without replications in the years 1999-2002. Different post-sowing ways of cultivation were assigned to the individual treatments, that is: 1. first ploughing - 12 cm, 2. cultivator application, 3. disc harrowing, 4. without post-harvest cultivation, including the herbicide Roundup 360 SL, 5. without post-harvest cultivation (without a herbicide), 6. ploughing - 20 cm, 7. disc harrowing. Pre-sowing ploughing was carried out on the first five units whereas on plots 6 and 7 the ploughing was abandoned. Only extreme simplifications in the presowing soil preparation significantly reduced the values of most examined parameters, and in consequence caused lower yielding of the triticale cultivated without ploughing. Also the remaining examined parameters reached the lowest values in the case of the treatment with non-ploughing cultivation which, only for the number of plants after germination and the weight of one thousand grains, were not statistically significant. A positive correlation between the grain yield and the final plant number per 1 square m, number of spikelets in an ear, number of grains in an ear and the ear length proved that only the plants with large, well filled ears make it possible to obtain high grain yields providing the number of plants per 1 square m is optimal
