The use of fish oil obtained as a by-product in canned fish production in fattening pig nutrition

A new source of fat has been introduced into the Polish feed market. The new fat is not only a good source of energy, but also of essencial fatty acids, and especially linoleic (LA n-6) and a-lonolenic (a-LN n-3) acids and their derivatives. It is fish oil obtained from thermal leakage taking place during canned fish production (often treated as noxious wastes). The thermal leakage is a mixture of water, fat and protein that forms during the process of steaming canned fish. To separate these components, a special technology was developed. Obtained fish oil was purified and mixed with antioxidant thus becoming a ready component for feed mix production. As can be concluded from the results, the fish oil meets the set criteria for feed fats, contains beneficial and desired composition of fatty acids that are used in animal nutrition and does not influence their homeostasis. Supplementing feed mix with fish oil caused significant increase of daily body gains of fattening pigs. Fattening pigs willingly ate it, and, at the same time, the fish oil did not influence negatively the sensory evaluation and the quality of meat obtained from animals fed the fish oil feed mix
