Growth parameters and changes of intestinal and fecal microbial populations in broilers fed diets containing various levels of sweet yellow lupine seeds

The present study evaluates the effects of incremental levels of sweet yellow lupine as substitute of soybean meal in the diet on chickens performance and microbiological makeup of intestinal digesta and faeces. Partial replacement of soybean meal (SBM) with lupine meal at a rate of 10 or 20 percent in the diet, had a positive effect on final body weight, while maintaining the same feed conversion ratio. However, complete replacement of SBM with lupine at rate 40 percent resulted in significant (P less 0.05) reduction final body weight. Yellow lupine influenced numbers and makeup of bacterial populations in the intestinal digesta, as well as in the faeces, but the overall effect was relatively week. Complete replacement of SBM with lupine resulted in an increased population of Lactobacilli and also tended to increase Enterobacteriaceae and Coliform. The present study indicates that poorer performance of the chickens fed 40 percent lupine in the diet were not associated with dramatic changes in the bacterial populations in the intestines
