A microplots experiment was carried out with spring barley in part controlling conditions in 2002-04. The response of cultivars: Binal, Jersey, Johan, Prestige, Bolina, Hanka, Nadek, Ryton and Tolar to sowing rate: 250, 350, 450 seeds per square m was obtained. The all cultivars responsed with increase of grain yield to the increase of sowing rate up to 450 seeds per square m. The highest effects were recorded for the Prestige, Ryton, Bolina and Tolar cultivars, the lowest for the Binal and Jersey cv. Variability of the grain yield in dependence on sowing rate was related to the increase of number of ears per unit area. Higher grain yields gave Bolina, Johan, Ryton and Prestige. Higher protein content in gain was at high sowing rate
