Soil organic matter (SOM) content depends on a lot of factors. The most important factor influencing organic matter status of soil are: natural (climate, soil parent material, topography, land cover) and human (land use, farming system, land management, land degradation) factors. The soil type and properties are important and explain initial C content. Sandy soils are usually low in organic matter and many soils rich in clay or amorphous constituents can accumulate organic matter under a stable form. Climate has mainly trough temperature and humidity a critical influence on carbon mineralization or accumulation. This influence explains the existence at a certain scale of a climate gradient north-south with high carbon content in the northern part of Europe and lower content in the southern part
