Main advantages of this group of crops- N-fixation and high protein content - result from a symbiosis with root bacteria. Legumes enable to reduce the energy costs in agriculture, are a source of protein for food and feed, contribute to biodiversity in crop rotations and permanent grassland, some of them are useful, for biomass production, land reclamation or even in the forestry. Important is also a broad species diversity from which it is possible to select the one suitable for given environmental conditions and type of usage. Unfortunately, the growing area in Poland as well as in Europe do not reflect above mentioned advantages
