Descriptors for Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa)
2006
This is the first publication devoted to the sub-Saharan African local tree species. This Descriptor list is developed because variations exist not only among populations of Shea tree but also among individual trees and that users working on genetic diversity of shea tree should not confuse varieties within the species. Five categories of descriptors - (1) Passport (Accession descriptors and Collecting descriptors), (2) Management (Management descriptors, Multiplication/regeneration descriptors), (3) Environment and Site (Characterization and/or evaluation site descriptors and Collecting and/or characterization/evaluation site environment descriptors), (4) Characterization (Plant descriptors) and (5) Evaluation (Plant descriptors, Abiotic stress susceptibility, Biotic stress susceptibility, Biochemical markers, Molecular markers, Cytological characters and Identified genes) are listed. Data from the first four categories should be available for any accession. The number of descriptors selected in each of the categories will depend on the tree species and their importance to the tree's description. Descriptors listed under Evaluation allow for a more extensive description of the accession, but generally require replicated trials over a period of time
