Significance of testing and frequency of hereditary anomalies in progeny test of Holstein Friesian bulls

The frequency of hereditary anomalies in calves, offspring of 51 sires of the Holstein-Friesian breed, was investigated on 14 farms in the Republic of Serbia during a six-year research period. Of a total of 7036 investigated calves, hereditary anomalies were present in 51. A total of 22 carious types of lethal and semilethal anomalies were registered. The most frequent anomaly was atresia ani with 16 cases (30.77%), followed by disorders of locomotory organs: ancylosis (3 cases), acroter iasis (2), arthrogryposis (1), ataxia (2), syndactilia (1). Following anomalies, with one case each, were also found: two-head, achondroplasia, brachygnatia inferior, hydrocephalus, theratoma, hernia umbilicalis, hernia inguinalis, tailless, and others. All congenital anomalies were described in detail. Their frequency in the total number of investigated calves was established, as well as the incidence by sires. Simultaneously, pedigrees of parents were analysed in order to establish the potential existence of any mutual ancestors.
