The role of molybdenum in vegetable production
2007
Maksimovic, I.
Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential microelement for plant metabolism. The functions of Mo are related to the valence changes that it undergoes as a metallic component of enzymes such as nitragenase, nitrate reductase, xanthine dehydrogenase, aldehyde oxidase, and possibly sulfite oxidase. Because of its involvement in the processes of nitrogen fixation, nitrate reduction, and the transport of nitrogen compounds, Mo plays a crutial role in nitrogen metabolism of plants. In soils with a marginal plant-available concentration of Mo, sulfur (S) fertilization may induce Mo deficiency due to antagonistic effects between Mo and S. Especially sensitive to Mo insufficiency are leafy vegetables, beans and cauliflower.
