In 1991, a new respiratory disease was discovered in broiler chickens in South Africa. A pleomorphic, gram negative, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from affected organs and later on, it was named Rhinotracheale. The infection is found to be worldwide in commercial poultry and different wild-bird species. Clinical signs, duration of the disease and mortality rate are variable and influenced by many environmental factors. The most often affected organs are air sacs and lungs. The treatmet of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale infections with antibiotics is difficult because of the resistance against to many antibiotics.
