In this paper, the results of leaflet, petiole, stem and peduncle histological analysis of five cultivated Trifolium species were presented. The aim of this work was to investigate structural characteristics that determine the quality and digestibility of plants used as forages and that could be useful in breeding of cultivated species. The results showed that cultivated species, especially Trifolium repens and Trifolium subterraneum, had low percentage of the tissues composed of thick-walled cells and high percentage of the tissues composed of thin-walled cells, which increased their digestibility. The reduction of percentage of lignified xylem, sclerenchyma and sclerenchymatous parenchyma was suggested as one of the very important selection criteria for future breeding strategies, leading to improvement of digestibility and quality of cultivated Trifolium species.
