The effect of cropping system on leaf area ratio (LAI), net assimilation rate (LAR) dry matter accumulation and grain filling were studied on fertilized and unfertilized three-year rotation after wheat. The highest leaf area index (LAI), both on unfertilized and fertilized plots, was found after anthesis. Three-year study revealed that grain yield strongly depended on leaf area index. The rate of net assimilation (LAR) differs in the plants on fertilized and unfertilized treatments. LAR on fertilized plots is the lowest when LAI is in the maximum level and declined afterwards. However, on unfertilized plots LAR showed permanent increase until the grain filling stage. Accumulation of dry matter occurred before pollination. After pollination grain development was found to be more intensive than dry matter accumulation calculated per wheat plant which was negligible.
