This article gives an overview of the possibilities of production and use of bioethanol in European Union (EU) and in Serbia, as a substituent of a part of gasoline for engines with internal combustion. Because of even higher depletion of fossil fuels and claims for ecologically cleaner fuels that emit less CO2, bioethanol production for these purposes gains even greater significance. According to Directive 2003/30/EC, Member States are obligated to till 2005, i.e. till 2010, produce or assure at least quantities of biofuels (bioethanol and biodiesel) that can substitute 2 per cents of fossil fuels. Directive 2001/77 promotes use of renewable resources of energy in such a way, that their share till 2010 in total energetic balance reaches 12 per cents.
