Effects of sowing dates on the yield and morphological traits of seed maize

The three-year trial was set up in 2003. The effects of three sowing dates (10-day intervals) on three seed maize inbred lines of different FAO maturity groups (L1-FAO 400, L2-FAO 500, and L3-FAO 600) and their morphological traits (ear length and diameter) were studied in the trial. The hybrid seed yield was determined after harvest. A regular linear decline in the yield occurred over all three tested FAO maturity groups in seed maize hybrids sown on latter sowing dates in 2003. There were significant differences between the tested inbreds. Although sowing dates affected the ear length and diameter, no regularities were established. In 2004, the highest, i.e. the lowest yield was recorded in the inbred L3 sown on the first sowing date, i.e. in the inbred L1 sown on the second sowing date, respectively. The longest (175 mm) and the shortest (157 mm) ears were found in the inbred L3 and the inbred L2, respectively. The sowing date did not significantly affect the change of the diameter. The effect of the sowing date was pronounced in the inbred L1.
