Effect of three tillage systems and two irrigation amounts on maize (zea mays l.)production

Three tillage systems and two amounts of irrigation water were used to determine their effect on the yield of maize (Zea mays L.). The experiments were conducted during the seasons of 2000/01 and 2001/02 at the Demonstration Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum, Shambat. The tillage systems were ridging only (T)), disc ploughing + disc harrowing + ridging (T2) and chiseling + harrowing + ridging (T3). The irrigation amounts were 100% ETc and 50% ETc based on Penman's equation. The experimental design was the strip-plot, with two replications. The results showed that tillage systems affected some soil physical properties; namely, bulk density and moisture content. Deep ploughing (T3), decreased the bulk density and resulted in better drying of the soil profile than minimum tillage (T), during both seasons. The results of the second season (2001/02) showed significantly higher values for the final yield and plant height at 30, 45, 60 and 75 days from sowing. The 100% ETc, alone, or in combination with tillage system, particularly chiseling, resulted in significantly higher yields during the two seasons
