The nutritional status of University of Khartoum students (113 males, 81 females) was assessed during an 18 months period using food intake (weighing method) and body mass index (BMI). Dietary intake provided 2254 and 1983 kcal/day for males and females. Females' protein intake (87.5 g.) had a higher contribution of animal foods hence higher fat intake compared to males. Protein contribution to the total energy intake was similar for both sexes. One-quarter of the males and 41.5% of the females had normal BM! initially, however mean BM! of normal males decreased significantly (P0.01) by the end of the study period (19.5-17.1) with only 13.6% of the original number having normal BM!. Mean BM! of normal females decreased significantly (P0.01) from 20.3 to 18.5 which still classified them as having normal BM! although only 40.9% of the original number still had normal BM!. The decrease in BM! was due to lower energy intake compared to WHO¬RDA (73.4% and 85.8%) for males and females respectively
