Adrenocortical and thyroid function, hormone and metabolite profiles and the onset of ovarian cyclolicity in dairy cows suffering from various forms of ketosis

The involvement of adrenocortical and thyroid hormones in the pathogenesis of ketosis, as well as the ovarian consequences of this metabolic disorders were studied in greater than or equal to 2 parity cows in 3 large scale dairy herds. On the results obtained it can be concluded that adrenocortical and thyroid gland functions are involved in the pathogenesis of ketosis. However, only the long-lasting form of hyperketonemia is a real risk factor for subsequent reproduction. Besides the high risk of mortality it may usually results in a serious delay in the time of the first ovulation and first visiable estrus. In the first few days after calving the decreased insulin and IGF-1 levels may be involved in the pathogenesis of this ovarian disorder.
