Effects of nitrogen fertilization and calcium and calcium carbonate on soil nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium

A field experiment was carried out at Al-Marj Research Center, northeast Libya, for two consecutive seasons (summers of 1997 and 1998) to examine the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and calcium carbonate (CaC03) on the content of soil nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium in MoIIisols (fine mixed thermic, Typic Rendolls) sown with maize (Zea mays). Nitrogen fertilizers were applied at the rates of 0, 80 and 160 kgN/ha in the form of urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP), while the CaC03 was added at the rates of 1 %, 6% and 12%, on weight basis. The treatments were arranged in l split-split plot design and replicated thrice. Soil samples were collected from the experimental site and air-dried, sieved and kept for analysis. Calcium carbonate treatments significantly reduced the total soil nitrogen and the sodium bicarbonate extractable phosphorus and significantly increased the exchangeable calcium content. The main nitrogen effect was significant on soil nitrogen and phosphorus but not on soil potassium. The interactions between the CaC03, nitrogen source aod the levels applied were significant on soil nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium
