The question of secondary metabolites that have allelopathic, herbicidal or toxic activity is discussed in this review article. Attention is focused on allelopathy and allelochemicals produced by plants, algae, bacteria and fungi which may affect the growth and development of agricultural and biological systems. The structure and activity of typical secondary plant metabolites are highlighted, as well as the attempts to utilize allelopathic relations to control weeds, primarilly in rice. Also, the main properties and mode of action of bilanafos are discussed as it is a natural product based in the isolated actinomycete Streptomyces higroscopius and has been used since 1984 as a herbicide product. The final section deals with plants that have toxic activity on animals and humans, especially those with poisonous compenents that also have cancerogenic effects.
