The effect of N-acetylcysteine on the ischaemic trigeminal ganglion

We evaluated the influence of treatment with a free radical scavenger N-AcetylCysteine (NAC) on trigeminal ganglion neurons, in a rat model of thirty minutes global brain ischaemia and three days survival. Two experimental groups of animals -- ischaemic non treated, and ischaemic preischaemically NAC treated (350 mg/kg i.p.) were evaluated by light and electron microscopy. The results obtained demonstrate, that preischaemic NAC administration substantially reduced the occurrence of degenerating small B-cells neurons.
