Regoverning markets in the Hungarian dairy sector

The paper discusses the issues of the Hungarian food chains have gone through deep restructuring during the last 15 years. Appearing of multinationals in the food chains the structure of food wholesaling and retailing have changed considerably. Not only the high number of small and medium size of retail shops have been affected by multinationals but food manufacturing firms and agricultural producers as well. The paper discusses the issue of regoverning markets in the vertical chain of dairy sector. Milk is one of the most important agricultural products having contribution to agricultural GDP as high as some 10-11 per cent. Focus is given to the activities and expansion of supermarkets and, to the question of how the small producers have been affected and tried to adjust. The policy aspect of how to support the small producers against super- and hypermarkets and the competitiveness of the dairy sector are also discussed.
