Many organisms, including higher plants, accumulate free proline in response to environmental stress. Although various studies have focused on the ability of proline as a compatible osmolyte involved in osmotic adjustment, its specific role in stress protection is still unclear. In this brief study we indicate that proline accumulation is not just an osmoprotectant in stressed plants but has a unique functions in protection key biological processes as well as primary photochemical reaction, lipid bilayer membrane stabilisation, scavenger of free radicals and even as a source of energy, carbon and reverse nitrogen in poststress recovery.
