The air pollution in the surroundings of an aluminium plant

The locality of the Ziarska kotlina basin belonged for many years to the heaviest polluted regions in the Slovak Republic. The current state of the air quality was monitored using automatic measurement equipment and the data were supplemented with additional ones - obtained using manual sorption-cumulative method that enables us to monitor the average long-term load on ecosystems as responded by passive samplers. According to the observed statistical characteristics, the load on the open area showed no long-term changes compared to the stand interior over the study period (Table 1, Fig. 1). The total proton load depends on the meteorological situation and climate conditions and reflects the seasonal changes (Figs 2, 3). The impact of the phenomenon in the Ziarska kotlina basin is mainly local. In 1998-2001 was the long-term tendency of the proton load moderately increasing (opposite to the long-term mean) which was connected with emission increasing from regional sources (Figs 4 and 5). The study into the current state and level of the proton load in the ground level of the atmosphere trough of summation methods complements the pattern of the total area deposition according the individual constituents of forest ecosystems.
