In this work we would like to contribute to the knowledge of the dynamics of herb layer during cyclic fir-beech forest development. The objectives are to determine dependency of the changes in herbal layer on crown projection sizes of the tree component of the primeval forest and to determine dependency of tree component characteristics and its crown projections at the selected fourteen areas with the sizes of 20 x 20 and 16 x 25 m, which were created in the vegetation period of the year of 2002. Tree crown projections were displayed using the SVS program, in which the significant difference between the growing stage with a high number of individuaIs and lower crown projections, and the decaying stage with the minimum number of individuals with large crown projections is visible at the first sight. Correlation analyses showed that the number of trees is the best characteristic, as it correlated with the herbal cover the most. It is interesting that the values of tree crown projection cover showed only the minimum correlative dependences. Based on our results it can be said that the herb layer dynamics is not affected only by the tree crown projection cover, but it is influenced also by probably more complex effects of multiple factors that still need to be examined.
