In natural ecosystems, the primary production depends heavily on microorganisms. The microorganisms help the roots to take up nutrients (mycorrhizae), bring nutrient elements into the ecosystem from atmospheric (nitrogen fixer, rhizobacteria) or mineral reserves (decomposers), protect roots from pathogens and stimulate the plant growth (pathogen-suppressive microorganisms, rhizobacteria), bind soil aggregates and stabilize the surface layer of many natural soils. To establish these processes, all organisms must be present and condition must be compatible with their needs.
