Physical and mechanical properties of beech wood from different biosocial position in the stand

The paper deals with physical and mechanical properties of beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) by comparing intermediate and dominant trees. Different biosocial position of a tree in the stand causes statistically significant difference in the annual ring width, wood density, axial, radial and volumetric shrinkage, compression strength, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity. There is no difference between the intermediate and dominant trees in tangential shrinkage. Different stem position (juvenile wood, faIse heartwood, sapwood) has statistically significant influence on physical and also on mechanical properties. Juvenile wood and false heartwood distinguish with wider annual growth increments, lower density, lower compression strength, lower modulus of rupture and lower modulus of elasticity when is compared to sapwood.
