Influence of different nitrogen fertilization rates on nutritive value of maize (Zea mays L.)

The aim of the work was to find the influence of different nitrogen fertilization rates on nutritive value of the whole maize plant, yield and economic valuation. In the experiment the medium late and late maturing silage hybrid Mila-400 was used. The experiment was realized on a loamy brown soil in natural conditions in south¬western part of the Slovak Republic (district of Nitra city). It had five variants of fertilization: N0 - maize was grown in the ground which has not been fertilized with nitrogen for six years (control variant) N60, N120, N180, N24O - rates of nitrogen were differentiated (60-120-180-240 kg absolute nutrients per hectare). Maize was harvested at the stage of milky waxy maturity in the end of August. The whole plants of maize were cut directly after harvest to 8-12 mm long pieces. In the samples of fresh matter the content of nutrients was determined and energy and nitrogen values were calculated. The differences between variants were evaluated statistically using the program Statgraphics, version 5.0. The results confirmed that with increasing nitrogen fertilization rates the contents of dry mater, fat, ash, nitrogen free extract and energy value decreased and contents of crude protein, crude fibre, organic matter and value of protein digestible in intestine (PDIN) increased. This tendency was not found in the variant with the highest rate of applied nitrogen, where the content of nutrients and protein value had an opposite tendency than in the other three fertilized variants. Application of nitrogen fertilization increased the yield of maize. Regarding economic effectiveness the most profitable variant was that with nitrogen rate of 120 kg per ha.
