Water samples taken from 14 selected sites of the River Khwae Yai and Khwae Noi, Amphur Maung Kanchanaburi province in March 1997 were analyzed for some heavy metals namely copper, zinc, lead, chromium, nickel and arsenic. The samples were digested using nitric acid prior to the determination by using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The metal contents in the water samples were found to be in ranges 0.002-0.005 mg/l for Copper, 0.002-0.008 mg/l for zinc, LT 0.002-0.028 mg/l for lead, LT 0.002 mg/l for chromium, LT 0.002 mg/l for nickel and LT 0.002 mg/l for arsenic. Matrix effects could be overcome by method of standard addition and certified materials. The average percentage recoveries of the method for determining copper. Zinc, lead, chromium, nickel and arsenic, were 98.5, 99.2, 98.5, 99.5, 99.0 and 99.0 respectively while relative standard deviation (n=11) were 2.20, 3.50, 2.58, 2.12, 2.60 and 3.10 percent respectively. The results indicate that metal no pollution in water existed. The data are useful for environmental impact study: increased in population and intensive industrialization in the catchment area give the outer part of the river potential for heavy metal contamination problems.
