Relationship between blood and milk ures levels in ewes of Ill de France breed and the Bulgarian synthetic population

The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the level of urea in the blood and the milk of the Ill De France sheep and of the Bulgarian Dairy Synthetic sheep Population - BDSP. In two consecutive days the milk yield was measured and the blood samples were taken from 10 ewes of Ill De France breed and 36 ewes of the Bulgarian Dairy Synthetic sheep Population. Milk and blood samples were taken in parallel from each animal during the morning milking. The urea was measured by the method of Angelov, Ibrishimov, Milashki 1999. There were no significant differences between the average level of urea in the blood and in the milk in the sheep of Ill De France and BDSP breeds - P 0.05. A very good correlation R2 = 0,82 was observed between the level of urea in the blood and the milk of these breeds of sheep. The determination of the content of urea in the milk could be a noninvasive and reliable method of monitoring the food status in dairy sheep.
