Research of types and varieties of the perennial grasses was realized for the creation of high yielding, well balanced in nutritive elements, longstanding agrophytocenoses adaptable to the soil and climatic conditions of the Vitebsk region of the Republic of Belarus. Research results showed that cultivation of quaternary grass mixtures (red clover (Trifolium pratense) + alfalfa (Medicago sativa) + timothy (Phleum) + fescue (Festuca)) made it possible to effectively use the soil and climate resources of the studied area, stabilize the herbage yield from year to year by means of the grain cereals growing, increase the fodder quality due to the legumes component part and provide the optimal sugar and protein ratio. The quaternary grass mixtures also lowered the weed estimation of grass stands (in course of 3 years in herbage yield there were stated only 1,8-2,0% of weeds). Clover, alfalfa and gramineous grass mixtures in the optimal conditions on sod-podzolic loamy soils could provide 2-3 hay cuttings and form the herbage yielding capacity of 560-600 c/ha and obtain 22-23 c/ha of crude protein. The content of calcium, phosphorous and carotene in herbage was higher in the clover, alfalfa and gramineous grass mixtures than only in the red clover and legume-grass mixtures with only one leguminous constituent
