[Content of lycopene and other carotinoids in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) fruits of Belarusian and foreign breeding]

Analysis of carotenoids content in different varieties of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) fruits of Belarusian and foreign breeding at different stages of ripening was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus for the selection of the most perspective forms of the natural antioxidants. Research results showed that the level of carotenoids content of tomato fruits and extracted seeds was characterized not only by its dependence on the variety peculiar features but also greatly varied against the maturity level. Immature tomato fruits were characterized by the predominance of xanthophylls over carotenes, while in fruits at the stage of the biological maturity the content of xanthophylls was declining, and carotenes were accumulated. Qualitative analysis by liquid chromatography method showed that the most common carotenoids in tomato fruits were lycopene and beta-carotene. In this respect the red-coloured tomato fruits were characterized by the predominance of lycopene and the yellow- and pink-coloured ones – by beta-carotene. Varieties with yellow color besides the carotenes also contained xanthophyll lutein and zeaxanthin. The highest amount of lycopene was typical for the red-coloured tomato samples Deviz and N7742 as well as for the pink-coloured tomato sample Oranzh-1 which could be recommended for their further use in plant breeding for samples with high content of lycopene
