Sedaghat, R.,Iranian Pistachio Research Inst., Rafsanjan (Iran Islamic Republic). Economics and Marketing Div.
This study was aimed to overview water availability, water salinity, irrigation sources and irrigation systems in pistachio farms in Iran. The study was performed by interviewing 200 sample respondents which were selected through a multistage random sampling technique in Kerman Province in 2003-2004. The results revealed that 70% of farmers were limited by water availability and 82% were using water with high salinity. In 94% of the farms water was extracted from deep bore wells, 97% of farms used the traditional irrigation system (flood irrigation). As shown by our results, pistachio farming in Iran is unsustainable.
