An economic feasibility study of covering the import gap of maize

The nutrition gap in Egypt is clearly represented through the inability of domestic production to meet domestic consumption of the main crops, namely, maize. The economy is then faced with the necessity to import a large proportion of its domestic consumption, 47°/. of maize during the period (2000-2002). causing the total imports of this to crop about 2.8 billion dollars in 2002. In this context, the research for Agriculture Development focuses on different measures in order to bridge the food gap and augment domestic production through domestic agriculture resources. Besides the outline and the framework of the research, the document also comprises future food gap forecasts and production costs, a feasibility study for the production of wheat in addition to proposing alternatives for enhancing economic feasibility., the document also highlights the estimated benefits potentially acquired by the Egyptian economy as result of implementing, prim arily, reducing the amount of agricultural imports, adding jobs opportunities in the agricultural sector and increasing investment opportunities in this sector.
