Effects of a perinatal zearalenone donation on reproductive organs from sows and female piglets

The objective of this field study was to evaluate the effect of zearalenone (ZON) artificially administered to crossbred sows in the last part of the gestation period and during the suckling period on the weight of their reproductive organs, and on body weights, weights of reproductive organs and mortality of their piglets. Fifteen sows and their 161 piglets were included in the study. The animals were divided into 4 groups according to the mode of ZON administration as follows: 1) control group (C); 2) ZON administered to the sows during both gravidity and lactation (GL); 3) ZON administered only during gravidity (GnL); ZON administered only during lactation (nGL). The weight of ovaries was higher in C than in experimental sows, whereas the opposite was observed for uterus. In piglets, weights of cervix and ovaries were slightly higher in C than in experimental animals. The lowest uterus weight was observed in the GL group, the highest one in the GnL group. The body weight of the piglets was influenced by the mode of ZON administration and age. At the 19th day of age, the highest body weight was observed in nGL piglets, the lowest one in GnL piglets. The highest mortality rate was recorded in nGnL piglets (41%) and in GL piglets (32%), the lowest one in nGL piglets (12%). ZON was detected in the milk of ZON sows. GL and nGL piglets accumulated ZON and its metabolite, alpha-zearalenol, in their biles.
