A three year field experiment was realised to quantify the effects of different rates of irrigation water on production of plants and soil processes in three types of grassland ecosystems occurring in lowland, highland and mountain regions. We assumed that water availability reflected in phytomass production and litter decomposition can modify soil characteristics, mainly the soil organic matter. Three climate scenarios were simulated: rainfall reduced by 50%, rainfall enhanced by 50% and natural rainfall of the current growing season. The values of all determined soil properties (pH, organic matter, N, P, K, Ca, Mg) varied mostly in a very wide range. The results of analysis of variance did not show any significant effect of the studied treatments on soil properties of the grasslands. Consequently, the obtained data and recorded insignificant differences have to be evaluated with caution.
